When people hear I bought one of the first iPads they tend to ask: But what will you use it for? Actually I had very specific purposes in mind and most of them are working out well so far. Number one is that I need to read a lot of scientific journal articles for my work. The archives and current issues of these are all available online now; I was recently able to take 30 years of back issues from my shelves to the recycling station. The iPad is perfect for sitting up in bed in the evening and reading not only these journals but also the New Yorker (which has current issues plus archives back to the 1920′s), Popular Science, and many others. (By the way, Kindle does not have a browser and cannot access these.) Number two, when I travel I want to be able to sit in a restaurant or bar and surf the Web. My iPhone will do this but it’s a parlor trick; the screen is far too small to read. Number three is to keep my “to do” list on a portable device.
I am pretty happy with iPad so far. It is a lovely device. But a whole lot of software development will be needed to capture the full potential. Apple is now maintaining two different operating systems; OS X for personal computers and the iPhone system. For the iPad they chose the latter. But now that people are going to expect much more functionality from the iPad, they have their work cut out for them to give the latter more of the capabilities of the former. I forsee a gradual convergence of the two.
There are many examples of the holes in the present iPad software but I will only list two. When I read those journals from Safari, I often want to save PDF’s of individual articles but there is no way to do so. Or: The Photo app will only open one picture at a time. Now that the screen is bigger, it should be possible to have multiple windows of multiple photos. Etc.
The built-in touch screen keyboard I found to be totally useless for any real typing. How can one type with fingers hovering over the screen for long periods? I bought the Bluetooth Apple keyboard () and it is a great addition which makes the whole package a lot more usable; I am writing this review on it now.
I have not yet figured out how to combine the iPhone and the iPad; I am definitely not willing to pay ATT for a data plan for both on 3G since I can obviously only use one at a time. One solution is to go to the 3G iPad and get a cheap, voice-only phone. Or else Skype on the iPad and no phone at all? To be determined.
Bottom line is that this is a lovely device but only at the beginning of a long development path. (Also, as you have probably heard, there is a WiFi problem on the early version which Apple is working to solve.) If you can wait a year, you will get a better product. But fanboys like myself will have plenty of fun with it right now.
